Coping with anxiety and tips to help minimize the symptoms

Anxiety disorder is considered to be the most common among many other emotional disorders. It is has been estimated that it affects more than twenty five million Americans.

According to Wikipedia anxiety is a psychological and physiological condition characterized by cognitive, somatic, emotional, and behavioral components. These components blend and create an unpleasant feeling that is typically linked with uneasiness, fear, or worry.

Anxiety is a generalized mood condition that occurs without a certain trigger stimulus. As such, it is derived from fear, which occurs in the presence of an observed threat.

Anxiety is usually a normal reaction to stress. When it becomes excessive, it can fall under the category of an anxiety disorder. Some of the effects include heart palpitations, fatigue, nausea, pain in the chest, shortness of breath, stomach aches, or headaches.

Other than the physical effects anxiety can cause, there are also emotional ones such as trouble concentrating, feeling tense or jumpy, anticipating the worst, irritability, restlessness, watching and waiting for signs of things to happen that are negative, feeling like your mind's gone blank, bad dreams, a trapped in your mind feeling, and feeling as if everything is scary.

Tips to help minimize the symptoms of anxiety

There are ways that can help minimize your anxiety; below I listed tips to help guide you in the process.

1. Taking time out for your self is crucial in order to keep stress under control. How can you function and be there for your deadlines and responsibilities if you could barely function yourself?

2. Rest and relaxation is imperative in order to prevent anxiety. Unfortunately many of us do not know how to do that, but we certainly can learn. This site offers great info on that area http://www.helpguide.org/mental/stress_relief_meditation_yoga_relaxation.htm

3. Some times I think we hear this so often it fly’s right over our heads. Eating healthy nutritional foods and getting exercise on a regular basis is tremendously important on many levels none the less for taming anxiety.

4. Sleep another important factor in preventing anxiety. Getting a good nights rest every night will help you handle your everyday pressures and responsibilities with a level head.

5. Practice getting rid of negative thoughts. When you catch yourself thinking something negative immediately shift to a positive or engage in a positive activity. Put some gratitude in your attitude; be grateful for the little things in life. Think of others and what you can do to help them. Sharing and caring for others tend to bring a positive and peaceful light in your life as well as the other person. When we are to self involved it can contribute to over analyzing everything, eventually causing it to evolve into anxiety.

6. Look into attending a support group or consider seeing a therapist to talk with and discuss methods of coping with anxiety. Seeking professional guidance can provide you with answers to so many of your unanswered questions regarding anxiety.

Thanks for the advice- you are correct, time outs are very imperative- I learned that with having children. Having two toddlers run amuck is not exactly the most relaxing life-but learning how to breath and take breaks-helped me learn to deal with it,and enjoy them.

Yes, those breaks and breathing exercising are a must for parents with toddlers running around. They sure came in handy when mine were toddlers. Thank you for the comment H.C Porter!

Hi Madison,

Thanks for the post. I just developed major anxiety attacks about four years ago. Its been really hard to find myself through the unrecognizable chaos in my head. It felt good to write about it though... posting a hub about it was my first sort of 'coming out'. So thanks for the advice and for getting the word out there. Cheers to you!

Oh gosh no...but, thank you so much for the kind comment. I guess I'm a student of life like most of us here at hubpages. I mostly write about my experiences and how I have overcome so many obstacles. At the same time it help me to continue to stay focus and practice what I preach. From reading your hubs I can tell you are also very knowledgeable and have a kind heart. I always appreciate your feed back. Again, thank you!
