Treat depression naturally

When some people first experience signs of depression they do not want to resort to medication as there first choice of treatment and that is perfectly understandable. Although, there are plenty of good treatments available with the use of medication, it is not always the answer for many. There are other alternatives such as a change of lifestyle that a person can rely on to help ease the symptoms of depression, below I have listed a few natural alternatives for dealing with depression.

Talk to others and keep it simple

Talk to others – Let those close to you in on your concerns of any kind, especially your concern about depression. Tell them how you feel and why you think you feel that way. Ask for their suggestions. Have regular contact with your loved ones and friends; engage in activities with them so that you do not get in the habit of isolating. Something as simple as inviting them over for a cup of coffee or to a movie night out can help immensely in having the opportunity to talk with others. Communication with others is important.

Keep it simple - In this day and age many of us are striving to be like the joneses, meet ridiculous deadlines, do all and be the almighty. We are running ramped trying to get everything done in minimal time and this can be a sure trap for depression because you are setting your self up for failure and many times depression can easily follow failure. Practicing one step at a time is very useful in maintaining mental stability. Also, lowering our expectations is a more rational way of looking at particular outcomes. If we expect big and get small then we get sad, full of anxiety and stressed. One of the best things you can do to help reduce symptoms of depression is to keep it simple.

Positive activities and humor

Positive activities – Sometimes individuals who are experiencing symptoms of depression often feel like they have not accomplished much or they tend to focus on past failures. A great way to boost self esteem is to get involved in things that will lift your spirits and make you look forward to your future such as registering for a class in something that you have always wanted to learn, not only will that make you feel good but in will also add to your resume. Join a bowling league where you can socialize with other’s while at the same time getting exercise. Book clubs have become quite popular over the past decade, they are a great way to improve your mind and get involve in mind stimulating discussion.

Humor – Help release the feel good chemical know as endorphins. Laughing is a great way to feel better and reduce feelings of depression. Believe it or not there are many things that can make you laugh and you don’t have to look hard, you tube has a fantastic category on TV bloopers I personally love them and they will definitely kick up those endorphins. Also, buy comedy DVDs keep them handy in your movie collection and pop one in when you are feeling blue, invite a friend out to a comedy club of course, limit the alcohol intake so that you can benefit from listening to the comedian and having a great ole time.

Exercise

Exercise – A big one in so many ways, exercise stimulates brain activity while helping you stay in good shape, aides in maintaining overall good health such as weight control, balance immune system, and helps achieve a better night sleep. All of which is important in preventing depressive symptoms. Different forms of exercise include walking, consider taking a daily twenty to thirty minute walk gradually increasing it, join a gym, a dance class or take up yoga. A sport is also ideal for getting exercise into your routine. Check with your local YMCA for swimming sessions or other sports. Many state parks offer free nature walks, research your local community paper or website to find out what is available.

Explore

Attacking the signs and symptoms of depression as soon as you feel they are creeping up can help a great deal in avoiding falling into a deep state of sadness. People suffer from depression in different degrees, best things to do is discover your options, join a support group of people who share the same concerns, consider speaking with a mental health proffesional, get informed and share your concerns with another person, never suffer alone. There are plenty of ways to overcome and ease the feelings of depressions reach out and explore them.

Great hub. Exercise has been so important for me to help with stress and keeping away depression. Once you've gone through deep depression once, you are right, it is easier to catch the signs of it before spiraling down into deep sadness. Great information here! :)

Great subject matter. As someone who has struggled with depression in the past it's hard to think it may sneak up on me again while I'm busy worrying about life. I especially like your section about keeping things simple. Especially now when a lot of us have lost our jobs we need to stop worrying about what others have and we don't and start being thankful for what we do. God bless!
