Overwhelmed! What should I do?

Overwhelmed
Have you ever been so overwhelmed with your responsibilities and schedule that you just did not know what to do? Where suddenly you went into a panic and broke out in a sweat or maybe even out of the blue your mind went blank because it was all too much to register?
It can be difficult to have so much to do and not know where to begin, feeling literally stuck, looking at the world and people around you getting things done, running around like chickens without heads while you are feeling like an extraterrestrial wondering why you can’t handle it.

What do I do?
Okay, do not fret and fuss we have all been there. Yes, even those headless chickens. And although, others experience may not have been to the extreme, there are ways you can get around your debilitating emotions and become less overwhelmed with your to do list and feel human once again.
First and foremost do not try to accomplish everything all at once. Just because you are not an alien also, does not mean you are a super hero. Breaking down your to do list into several parts and completing them one by one beats not doing any of them at all.
For example, let’s say you have five very important things that need to get done and in your past experiences your overwhelming emotions have kept you from completing similar tasks. Take the first out of the five and do it, forgetting for the moment about the other four. Once you are done with the first, take a moment to feel how great it is to have that particular monkey of your back, breathe in and out and acknowledge how freeing it feels to get one thing out of the way imagining how much better it will be to finish the next. Do not; I repeat do not go to sleep thinking or worrying about the other two or three that did not get done. Instead say to yourself “WOW, in the past I couldn’t even finish one thing, look at me go, this feels darn good.”
It has been said that practice makes perfect and that is none the less true. Before you know it, completing your tasks will become second nature and you will be getting five, ten, fifteen things done in a day. The important thing to remember is to pat your self on the back every now and then, appreciating the freeing feeling of fewer things to do on your list or schedule.
There is another popular saying which goes like this “change a thought, move a muscle” it happens to be one of my favorites.
I always say attitude is everything, if we take the time out to step back and find the good in things it will make life a lot easier and pleasurable.
Another example: Let’s say you have been meaning to go to the post office to mail out a few packages. You have been putting it off for several reasons one of which it is too far and you have no means of transportation. Now, if you look at it in a different way, a more positive one, you would see that you can take advantage of the great exercise you will get walking to the post office while taking in the nice fresh air.
One more example of finding the good in things is the good night’s sleep you will recieve when you have fewer things to worry about before going to bed. Who does not like that, I guess it is safe to say we can all appreciate it.

I, so hear you:) I have been in this place before, exasperated with paperwork and responsibilites. The problem was that I am only one person, trying to do everything for everybody. Well, I started crying for Help!, literally. I realized, I couldn't do it all on my own, it was an impossible feat to begin with. Nice tips, you shared, fresh air can do a body good:)
Another good hub Madison, again rated up and useful. :)
So true! A good hub. I agree that we just need to look at one job at a time, and give ourself praise when we get it done.
Feeling overwhelmed makes us not want to start.I have found that once I force myself to get started it is not THAT bad.
I give myself mini rewards. Since I like to be on the computer, I will tell my self STERNLY, "After you do ____,_____, and _____, you can spend______(amount of time)on the computer." Works most of the time, even though I sometimes pout at the mean old grouch who imposed this on me!

Wow you're indeed a very talented writer. I am new at this and I'm going to give it a try also.
Such true sentiments of the overworked, overstressed and overwwhelmed. We've all been there some time but I like your strategy about if you get 2 out of 5 done then thank yourself about completing 2, don't worry about the others until you can get to them. I'll come back to this hub next time I'm overwhelmed, thanks Madison.
your all hubs are great this one is near to my life...
Great Hub about our attitude and how it can change the vision of the things.

Great hub Madison. Very true, that if you step back and evaluate, you'd find much to like about your life. Breaking down tasks works for me.
Its all about how you approach a task. If you get overwhelmed, you'd have laid the foundation to lose the battle even before it got started.
Voted up and rated 'useful.' Thanks for sharing :)
